Jaisalmer called the Golden City - due to its yellow sandstone buildings, is situated at the edge of the Great Thar Desert. Overlooking the city from 80m-high Trikuta hill (three-peaked) is the Jaisalmer fort, which was built in 1156. The fort is encircled by 99 bastions. Most of the inhabitants of the fort used to work for local maharajas - nowadays they run their shops, guesthouses and hotels. The city of Jaisalmer is famous for its intricately carved havelis (houses of the wealthy merchants), including such famous buildings as: Patwa-ki-Haveli, Salim Singh-ki-Haveli and Nathmal-ki-Haveli.
